It is argued that caregivers of the elderly should recognize the elderly's spiritual needs, including religious, existential, and communication needs, and attempt to maintain and promote the elderly's spiritual health.A 73-year-old man with primary lung adenocarcinoma (StageIA3), which was solid nodule in the posterior segment, was simultaneously diagnosed as having partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) and a tracheal bronchus in the same lobe on preoperative chest computed tomography. Right upper lobectomy was performed as the definitive treatment for both the lung cancer and the PAPVC. The superior pulmonary vein connected to the proximal superior vena cava and the pulmonary artery to the apical segment diverged at the proximal portion of the right pulmonary artery trunk along with the tracheal bronchus. The patient's pulmonary arterial pressure improved after lobectomy. The patient is living well without recurrence of lung cancer 6 months after surgery. In conclusion, it is important to confirm the presence of anomalous pulmonary vein drainage to prevent the lethal change of pulmonary-systemic blood flow. We compared the neuroprotective function of the agmatine and agmatine-FITC by treating them in neurons after excitotoxic stimulation. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the third gas signal molecule, plays important regulatory role in learning and memory functions. Inhibition of excessive autophagy and upregulation of silent information regulator 1 (Sirt-1) have been reported to prevent cognitive dysfunction. Therefore, this present work was to address whether H2S attenuates the cognitive impairment induced by SD in Wistar rats and whether the underlying mechanisms involve in inhibition of excessive autophagy and upregulation of Sirt-1. After treatment with SD for 72 h, the cognitive function of Wistar rats was evaluated by Y-maze, new object recognition, object location, and Morris water maze tests. The results shown that SD-caused cognitive impairment was reversed by treatment with NaHS (a donor of H2S). NaHS also prevented SD-induced hippocampal excessive autophagy, as evidenced by the decrease in autophagosomes, the down-regulation of Beclin1, and the up-regulation of p62 in the hippocampus of SD-exposed Wistar rats. Furthermore, Sirtinol, an inhibitor of Sirt-1, reversed the inhibitory roles of NaHS in SD-induced cognitive impairment and excessive hippocampal autophagy in Wistar rats. The main question we address with this review is the clinical relevance of the possible effect on autoimmunity exerted by the use of iodine-enriched salt to correct iodine deficiency. In animal models, exogenous iodine is able to trigger or exacerbate thyroid autoimmunity, but it is still not clear whether the observed immunological changes are duethyroid dysfunction, including thyroid autoimmunity mostly represented by euthyroid or subclinical hypothyroid autoimmune thyroiditis. However, this sensitivity provides a unique opportunity to combine flow sensors of differing technological principles as an alternative to measuring volatile anesthetic gas concentration, particularly for austere settings. To determine the feasibility of flow sensor fusion for volatile anesthetic concentrations monitoring, eight flow sensors were tested with isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane, ranging in concentrations from 0-4.5%, 0-3.5%, and 0-18%, respectively. Pairs of flow sensors were fit to the volatile anesthetic gas concentration with a leave-one-out cross-validation method to reduce the likelihood of overfitting. Bland-Altman was used for the final evaluation of sensor pair performance. Several sensor pairs yielded limits of agreement comparable to the rated accuracy of a commercial infrared spectrometer. The ultrasonic and orifice-plate flowmeters yielded the most combinations of viable sensor pairs for all three volatile anesthetic gases.
